We posted an article recently about how masks are banned from some stores, and the video below shows one reason why. (Below the video is a news release about the incident):

Here is a copy of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office press release:

A would-be robber faced one obstacle after another as he tried to hold up a convenience store near Orange City Saturday night. First, there was a line of customers, and the robber had to patiently wait his turn while wearing his Halloween mask. Then the clerk didn’t believe him when he announced the robbery. Then the robber tried to open the cash register himself, but failed. Finally, as the robber drove away empty handed, he got his stolen pickup truck stuck on the road shoulder, forcing him to flee on foot from there.

The man implied he had a weapon, but never displayed one, and there were no injuries reported. Responding Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputies searched the area, but didn’t find the suspect. The robber entered the Kangaroo Express, at 1701 N. Volusia Ave., at approximately 11:30 p.m. wearing a Halloween mask.

He then waited in line, and even offered to allow a man behind him to skip ahead. But the man politely turned him down. When the robber finally approached the counter, he handed the clerk a note announcing the robbery. The clerk thought it was a joke. This forced the robber to jump over the counter, while implying that he had a weapon, and try to open the register. He couldn’t get it open, so he then ran out the door, and witnesses saw him jump into a pickup truck and speed away.

While fleeing, the robber apparently lost control of the vehicle and swerved off the road near the intersection of New York Avenue and Carpenter Avenue. The truck got stuck on the shoulder, and so the robber was forced to abandon the vehicle and run away on foot. Deputies later discovered that the truck had been stolen from a nearby bar parking lot. The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 5’10” and about 18 years old.

Beside the mask, he wore a dark shirt, blue jean shorts and white tennis shoes. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact Investigator Chuck Lee at (386) 668-3830 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida toll-free at 1-888-277-TIPS. Callers to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.
